What To Do About German Cockroaches On Your Sacramento Property
Here in Sacramento, we have the pleasure of enjoying an abundance of sunshine, green outdoors, and delightful places to dine out. However, we still suffer from an influx of cockroaches. Though we experience different cockroach species, today we're going to discuss the German cockroach.
German Cockroach Basics
German cockroaches are small, about ½ inch long. They are easily identified by the two dark brown stripes on the front of their light to dark brown bodies. Nymphs have two dark brown stripes over the whole of their bodies. German cockroaches are most often found in the kitchen and bathroom. These areas have easy access to food and water. Cockroaches forage at night and stay hidden during the day.
German Cockroach Lifecycle
German cockroaches cannot survive outside your Sacramento home, so they are rarely seen outside. As cockroaches go, the German cockroach is a better mother than most. She lays her eggs in an ootheca or purse-like case. It holds about three dozen eggs. She carries the egg case with her until it is about to hatch or hatches. Once the German cockroach nymphs are hatched, they are on their own. The mother provides no further care. It takes 2-6 months for the cockroaches to grow up and become adults. Once an adult, the German cockroach lives about nine months. German cockroaches can quickly build up to a huge problem.
The Dangers Associated With German Cockroaches In Your Sacramento Home
German cockroaches frequently walk through spoiled food and sewage. They then walk through your food. This can spread things like Salmonella and E. coli onto the food they crawl across. In addition, they leave an unpleasant taste and smell on the food they have crawled on.
German cockroaches can cause asthma to get worse, especially in a child. The feces and cast skins can cause asthma and allergies. In one study, children who are allergic to cockroaches and lived where there was a high level of cockroach reside had three times as many hospitalizations as other children.
Unfortunately, German cockroaches are difficult to control. They have developed resistance to many common pesticides. Because of their small size, they can hide in small cracks when pesticides are used, and so come out unscathed. They are hard to poison with bait, too, as they develop an aversion to it.
How To Prevent German Cockroaches
