Occasional Invader Identification & Prevention
What are occasional invaders?
Occasional invaders are those annoying insects that find their way into your home during random times of the year. One day your house is free of pests; the next day, it's inundated with occasional invaders! These pests usually invade when the weather becomes too hot, dry, or cold for them to live comfortably.
Some of our areas most regular, occasional invaders include the following:
- Crickets
- Boxelder bugs
- Stink bugs
- Centipedes
- Millipedes
- Silverfish
- Earwigs
Are occasional invaders dangerous?
Occasional invaders aren't pests that pose a considerable threat to people, our pets, or our property. However, their presence should be concerning for two reasons. First, if occasional invaders are in your home, it means there are openings leading inside that they are getting through. Second, since most occasional invaders have high moisture needs, if they are migrating into your home, it indicates that a moisture problem may be present that you should take care of.
Though occasional invaders are not dangerous, they do cause problems, including damaging fabrics, contaminating food, and staining surfaces with their excrement.
Why do I have an occasional invader problem?
Our yards and properties provide occasional invaders with the things they need to thrive like gardens, flower beds, trees, and grass. When these pests live near our homes, it is easy for them to find their way inside, moving through spaces under doors and cracks in the foundation. These pests are also accidentally introduced into our homes in potted plants, boxes, and other outside items.
Where will I find occasional invaders?
In our homes, occasional invaders move to spaces that mimic their outdoor environment. Places in a house that are traditionally damp are where you'll most likely find these pests like crawlspaces, wall voids near pipes, and in kitchens and bathrooms. Other hiding spots include cardboard boxes, folded linens, and pantry areas.
